Shopping for a new mattress can be exciting (You're about to upgrade the quality of your sleep!) and possibly overwhelming. There are so many options!

Here are some easy tips to remember while you're shopping, courtesy of Josh Howard at Ross Furniture Company & Mattress Gallery:

1) Go ahead and lie down. In fact, take off your coat and set aside your purse so you can lie on the showroom mattress just like you lie on your bed at home. All Ross Furniture sales staff is non-commission, so they are happy to let you lie on a mattress for 15 minutes (or more) to see if you feel any pressure on your back and not pressured to buy any mattress. (And there are pillow protectors and foot protectors in place.)

That might be all the time you need to make an informed decision about the mattress' comfort. "Panelists who took beds home for a month-long trial rarely changed the opinion they formed after the first night," according to Consumer Reports.

Overall, people who sleep on their stomach or sides tend to like medium or soft mattresses, while people who sleep on their backs tend to like firm or extra firm mattresses.

2) Educate yourself about the difference in hybrid mattresses and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam mattresses really conform to your body, promoting less movement and protecting your partner from being jostled if you get up in the middle of the night, Howard said. The technology behind the heat-dispersing cooling gel has really improved in the last 5-7 years, so if you found memory foam mattresses hot in the past, you might be more comfortable now.

Meanwhile, hybrid mattresses combine springs and memory foam, so they have that traditional bounce many are used to.

3) Expect pillow-top mattresses to get softer more quickly. The material in the pillow-top breaks down more quickly than memory foam, so if you're interested in a pillow-top mattress, you should be comfortable with the idea that it might be twice as soft in just 3 or 4 years, said Howard, who loves his pillow-top mattress.

4) Remember to ask about warranties. At Ross Furniture, all mattresses are available with a 10-year warranty, which is typically the lifespan of a mattress. The iComfort mattress also includes a 120-day comfort trial; if you aren't satisfied with the mattress within that time frame, you can exchange it for another. (*Ask sales rep for all the details.)

5) Consider if an adjustable frame might be right for you. If you're generally more comfortable in a recliner than a flat mattress, definitely consider it, Spine-Health.com advises. Adjustable frames can help with snoring, acid reflux, and people who have trouble sleeping unless their legs or back is elevated. They're also great for senior citizens who appreciate help getting in and out of bed. (At Ross Furniture, any mattress can be upgraded with an adjustable frame.)

If you were considering buying a new mattress in 2019, now is a great time to go shopping, because Ross Furniture has sales on select mattresses through Jan. 10. Serta even has a handy online tool to suggest which mattress would be right for you.
