Walt Disney loved going to amusement parks with his young children and that gave him the inspiration to build a park around the movie and cartoon characters he had created as well featuring the different phases of American history.

On July 17, 1955  Disneyland opened it's gates and even after a rough start the empire flourished. Over 650 million people have gone the gates to enjoy the experience.

The dedication for the park reads :    "To all who come to this happy place: Welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."      Walter E. Disney incorporated some of his own personality and quirks into Disneyland buildings, rides and exhibits. Here is an interesting list of some of the things a visitor might overlook or just plain not know about from an article on MSN.com
