I was in TIZZY last week when my wife's co-worker said that Water Country in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was closing.

The source, according to a co-worker, was a letter to the town...

She could not find that letter, I could not find that letter, it must be a rumor - right?

Well, then why are new sources like CBS telling me Water Country has a new owner?!

Let's break it down.

Is Water Country in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, closing?

No. No. No.

It is not closing - no one is closing this iconic water park - not if I have anything to do with it.

*Yes, I go to this water park with my wife and friends without kids and have the time of our lives - this place rocks*

But New England's biggest water park, Water Country, does have a new owner...

Why did Water Country in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, sell?

Perhaps the "Water Country is closing" RUMOR was started once the news broke that there was new ownership.

According to a CBS News article, Water Country and other New England attractions were sold to Herchend, the same company that runs Dollywood and other family amusement parks.

If public water slides and pools are not for you, have you tried a personal pool rental?

As to the WHY Water Country sold: the current (now former) owner of Water Country, Palace Entertainment, is selling its U.S business to focus on their European market - that's all.

When is Water Country Opening for 2025?

The new owners of Water Country, Herchend Family Entertainment, say that Water Country plans to open June 7 with no immediate changes.

The new ownership recognizes that Water Country has been a staple in New England for over 40 years.

They have no plan to close or make major changes; however, the company is planning on exploring enhancements to make the place even better than it already is!

9 Closed Maine Amusement & Water Parks

We have put together a list of now closed amusement parks and water parks. Some of these were in operation in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s... Some haven't been around for over a century. ***Keep in mind that some of the information regarding when these places were open and what they offered comes from listener comments and stories passed down by people who visited (or worked at) these parks.
