I was reading about the history of Manchester, The Queen City, on Wikipedia and learned that it was once known as Tyngstown in honor of veterans of Queen Anne's War and thought "maybe that's the origin of the nickname". Nope.

The answer, frankly, is a little disappointing. It turns out Queen City is just a generic term for any city who has the largest population in a county or state (or province) but isn't the capital. Obviously, not every city that fits this description is associated with the nickname but is fairly common nonetheless--  and it happened to stick in Manchester.

Now as to why it is also known as Manch-Vegas, you'll need to come up with your own explanation.
