It seems the pothole season in New Hampshire is off to an early start this year and that could mean big bucks for repairs.

Triple A of Northern New England says damage caused by potholes cost drivers across the nation, approximately $3 billion annually.

Pat Moody, Director of Public Affairs for AAA Northern New England says:
“In the last five years, 16 million drivers across the country have suffered pothole damage to their vehicles,” 'The problems range from tire punctures and bent wheels, to more expensive suspension damage.”

1. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have substantial tread depth, as they are the only cushion between a pothole and the body of your car.

2. If there's no way around the pothole, before you hit it, reduce your speed and keep the wheels straight.

3. Leave space between you and the driver in front of you. This way, you may be able to avoid an upcoming pothole.

4. Use extra caution during and after a rain storm. Some potholes will get filled with water, making them much harder to detect.
