The Dover Place I Didn’t Realize I’d Miss This Much
'll admit it.
When I first moved here and heard the Dover Public Library was going to be closed for renovations, I thought, "That's nice."
And somewhere along the way, I realized I was missing a lot more than I expected.
Maybe it's because I'm a radio guy. Maybe it's because I've always loved a good story. Or maybe it's because there's just something about a library that feels different from anywhere else.
Either way, I can't wait for the Dover Public Library to reopen.
When I first moved to Dover, one of the things I loved doing was simply exploring. New coffee shops. New trails. New neighborhoods. And one of the places that immediately felt special was the library.
It's one of those places that reminds you to slow down for a minute.
In a world where everything is scrolling, swiping, and moving a hundred miles an hour, libraries still feel like a place where you can breathe. They're not just about books anymore. They're community gathering places. They're where kids discover a favorite story for the first time. Where students study. Where people learn new skills. Where someone can sit quietly for a little while and escape into another world.
The Dover Public Library has been operating out of the McConnell Center while renovations transformed the historic Carnegie building on Locust Street. The project includes expanded meeting spaces, improved accessibility, updated furnishings, new carpeting, and a larger Children's Room while preserving the character and beautiful woodwork that make the building so special. The historic front façade remains intact, keeping the charm that generations of Dover residents have come to know and love.
And now, after more than a year of renovations, the wait is almost over.

The library is scheduled to reopen on June 26, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house planned for the community. Residents will have the chance to explore the newly renovated space and see what the next chapter of the Dover Public Library looks like.
For me, that's exciting.
Because libraries aren't just buildings filled with books. They're one of those places that quietly make a community feel like home.
And if you've ever wandered through the stacks, found a book you weren't looking for, or watched a kid get excited about reading, you know exactly what I mean.
I'll definitely be stopping by when the doors reopen.
Something tells me I'm not the only one.
