Camp in a Yurt at This Creepy 1800s Fort in Portland, Maine: ‘Fortland, ME’
If you're looking for a unique camping stay, I just found one of the coolest opportunities in New England.
Fortland Maine is an old 1808 military defense fort used during the American Civil War. And, you can see where this is going, you can actually camp there and explore the creepy forts old tunnels, and defense posts.
This unique camping experience starts with a boat ride to the island - yes - you have to take a boat ride to get here (don't worry it's included in the reservation).
Not only will you have the opportunity to explore this stone fort, but the camping aspect of this island is amazing, too.
On the island, you have three staying choices, all beautiful.
It is worth knowing that you will NOT sleep in the fort, but rather a gorgeous "glamping" type of shelter.
The stay options, according to the Fortland website:
1. A yurt with a queen or two twins.
2. A tent cabin with a queen or a twin.
3. The whole island/fort. Yes, you can actually rent out the entire place for an epic sleepover, wedding, birthday, etc. There are 23 beds, or you can bring your own tent and have up to 40 people.
And the views (outside of the creepy 1800's defense fort) are spectacular.
When staying at Fortland you also get lawn games, cookware, a fire pit, lanterns, compostable toilets, and more - basically everything you need to make you feel safe while you're camping on an island... near a fort...used during a war...creepy.
To book your stay or learn more, check out the Fortland website.
