A Maine Sheriff's Deputy and Police K9 were both shot in a standoff in Maine on Monday.

According to a press release by Maine Department of Public Safety Spokeswoman, Shannon Moss, Maine State Police along with several deputies from the Aroostook County Sheriff's Office responded to the Maine town of Portage following a call for help.

What led to the large police response?

Moss went on to explain that a female contacted authorities following an alleged domestic assault incident involving Steven Righini, 29. When police arrived, they learned that the suspect had allegedly become aggressive and thrown the female against a wall.

When police arrived, the female had been able to escape the home and was outside, however, Righini was still inside with a toddler child. Police were able to coax Righini outside but a brief struggle ensued where Righini pulled a firearm from his waistband and shot Deputy Shane Campbell in the shoulder.

The suspect made it back into the home

Following the shot, police returned fire but Righini made it back into the home with the toddler still inside. A short while later, Righini then attempted to flee in a vehicle but police disabled it.
