Checking for Charity in Maine Was Born Out of a Love of Hockey
Checking for Charity was born out of a love for hockey and a desire to give back to the community in Maine.
In 2017, two South Portland firefighters hatched an idea: a charity hockey event with a couple of games and a focus on South Portland. Through the support and hard work of many firefighters and community members, the event has grown and raised over $125,000 in its first seven years! The event is on Sunday, March 24, from 11 am - 3 pm!
MARCH 24, 2024, AT WILLIAM B. TROUBH ICE ARENA IN PORTLAND
These dedicated firefighters have not stopped raising money for the community they love, and they are wicked excited to bring back this popular tradition! They are even adding Boston Bruins's anthem singer Todd Angilly! Of course, he'll be singing, but he will also be available for pictures and autographs!
The event is the largest fundraiser the South Portland Professional Firefighters conduct each year. All of the money raised is donated to a variety of non-profit organizations and charities, including Cans for a Cure! This year's focus charity is Make-a-Wish Maine.
There is a silent auction again this year with so many amazing items, and new this year is a middle school skills competition!
Plan your Sunday, March 24! Lori Voornas from 94.9 HOM will be there handing out cool solar eclipse glasses (yes, they are certified official glasses!).
Lots of great goodies will be in the silent auction too! It's an afternoon filled with so much fun and support.
