The Number of Walmarts in New England Show What a Retail Juggernaut They Are

Walmart first came to Maine in 1991 with the opening of the very first store in the Pine Tree State in Scarborough. Stores then started to pop up all over the state and throughout New England.

According to Wikipedia, as of October 31, 2022, Walmart had 10,586 stores and Sam's Clubs in 24 countries. It's the world's largest company by revenue making $611.3 billion in 2023, and it's the largest private employer in the world with 2.2 million employees.

As Walmart grew over the years, it began building "Super Centers" to be your one-stop shopping location; a department store, grocery store, and pharmacy under one gigantic roof. Stores without groceries and pharmacies are called "Discount Stores."

Of those 10,586 Walmart stores, there are 143 throughout New England, not counting Sam's Club stores. Its closest competitor, Target, has just 93 stores in New England. But how many Walmarts do the individual New England states have? We've got the numbers directly from Walmart's website.

Maine - 22 Walmarts

Maine has 19 Supercenters and three Discount Stores for a total of 22, ranking fourth for the number of Walmarts among the New England states.

New Hampshire - 26 Walmarts

New Hampshire has 19 Supercenters and seven Discount stores for a total of 26, which ranks it third for the number of Walmarts among the New England states.

Vermont - Six Walmarts

Vermont: has three Supercenters and three Discount stores for a total of six, making it the state in New England with the least amount of Walmart stores.

Massachusetts - 48 Walmarts

Massachusetts has 27 Supercenters and 21 Discount stores for a total of 48 Walmarts, which makes it no surprise that Massachusetts holds the crown for the most Walmarts in New England.

Connecticut - 32 Walmarts

Connecticut has 12 Super Centers and 20 Discount Stores for a total of 32 Walmarts, ranking it second for the number of Walmart stores among New England States.

Rhode Island - Nine Walmarts

Rhode Island has five Supercenters and four Discount Stores for a total of nine Walmarts. It ranks fifth for the number of Walmarts among the New England states.
