Spring is officially here, and before long everything will be in full bloom. After a long, cold winter, there’s nothing better than watching nature come back to life.

And in New Hampshire, that seasonal transformation is celebrated in a pretty special way- through the flower that represents the state itself.

The purple lilac, New Hampshire’s official state flower, was "first planted in Portsmouth in 1750 and later named the state flower in 1919. Chosen for its hardiness, it reflects the resilience and character of the people who call New Hampshire home," according to nh.gov.

That connection between history, nature, and community lives on today in Rochester’s Lilac Family Fun Festival: a lively event that celebrates the spirit of the state flower in a whole new way.

While lilacs traditionally bloom in the spring, their legacy carries into the summer through this family-friendly gathering.

Rochesternh.gov states that this year, the festival will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Spaulding High School and the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center, with a rain date of Sunday, July 12. The event is designed with families in mind, featuring "free kiddie carnival rides, games, food trucks, local vendors, and live entertainment."

The evening wraps up with what many consider to be one of the best fireworks shows in New Hampshire! A perfect way to close out a celebration rooted in community pride. Guests should note that parking is limited, so walking from downtown is encouraged, and nearby road closures will be in place during the fireworks for safety.

It’s a different kind of bloom, less about petals and more about people. But the meaning remains the same. The lilac isn’t just a flower you admire for a few short weeks each spring. In Rochester, it’s a symbol that brings the community together, carries local history forward, and reminds everyone to celebrate the simple joys of the season.

And let’s be honest, whether you’re stopping to smell fresh lilacs on your walk or watching fireworks light up the summer sky, it’s all part of what makes this time of year feel so special.
