I don’t mean to beat a dead horse, but being the new guy in town, I’m learning new stuff every day. If you hang around New Hampshire long enough (or honestly… like a weekend or rely on your new co-workers), you’ll notice there are a few things locals are borderline obsessed with. Not casually into… but, to use the term loosely…obsessed.

Here are 3 that have come up over and over:

Maple Syrup (like… SERIOUSLY)

This isn’t just a topping up here, it’s basically a personality trait. Locals call it liquid gold.

Spring = “sugaring season” (it’s a whole thing)
People actually visit sugarhouses like it’s a social activity

New Hampshire is known for producing high-quality maple syrup, and “Maple Weekend” is a legit statewide tradition where people go watch it being made and eat their weight in pancakes.

If you say you use store-brand syrup… you will be judged.

The Outdoors (All. Year. Long.)

New Hampshire locals don’t “go outside”… they live outside.

Summer = lakes, hiking, kayaking

Fall = foliage drives (the Kanc is basically sacred)

Winter = skiing, snowmobiling

Spring = mud season… but they still go out anyway

The state is known for its mountains, lakes, and year-round outdoor recreation, from hiking and boating to skiing and snowmobiling

Translation: If the weather is “bad,” just wear different boots.

Local Food Traditions (There are apparently "seasons")

Food here is tied HARD to seasons and local culture.

Fall = apple cider + cider donuts (non-negotiable)

Coast = steamers (soft-shell clams dipped in butter)

Hunting culture = venison is a real thing, not exotic

Apple cider, cider donuts, seafood like steamers, and even venison are all staples tied to New Hampshire’s identity and traditions

I’m told that it’s less “what do you feel like eating?” and more “what season is it?”
