Late next year, or early 2019, a fourth travel lane is installed in both directions. This, as the "High-Level Bridge" gets an overhaul. The maintenance work will be done during late next year, or early 2019. According to Seacoastonline.com, during periods of high traffic, the breakdown lanes would convert to travel lanes by using messaging signs on the span’s approaches.

MDOT spokesman Ted Talbot last year said engineers looked at adding width to the travel deck, but that proved too costly. Total cost of the rehab is pegged at $27.9 million and will be split by the two states.
