Punch the Monkey: Why the Internet Fell in Love and What It Says About New Englanders
We all need a stuffed monkey like Punch. Honestly? Yeah. We really do.
I don’t know what it says about me, or about New England in general, but my TikTok feed has been taken over by Punch the Monkey. And listen, we’re not exactly known for wearing our feelings on our sleeves up here. But this one? This one got us. I'm not crying, you're crying.
Something soft to hold onto when the world feels loud. Something that doesn’t ask questions, doesn’t judge, just says, “You’re safe for a minute.”
Punch figured it out before the rest of us. And maybe that’s the whole lesson.
It feels like every scroll lately is a reminder that the world is loud, divided, and exhausting. And then, boom, there’s Punch. This small, wide-eyed monkey who somehow managed to cut through all of that and give the internet something pure to rally around. Something gentle. Something hopeful.
The Story of Punch The Monkey
Punch’s story didn’t start out great. According to the Today website, He was rejected by his family, kicked away, pushed aside, left without the comfort that every baby animal deserves. Zoo keepers noticed right away. T
hey stepped in, not just to keep him safe, but to help him feel safe. And that’s where the most unexpected hero enters the story: a plush monkey.
They gave Punch an IKEA DJUNGELSKOG soft toy orangutan. Big eyes. Soft arms. Permanently calm expression. And Punch latched on to it like it was life itself. He carries it everywhere. He sleeps with it. He clings to it when things feel overwhelming.
That little plushie became his security blanket, his stand-in family, his reminder that comfort exists.
And maybe that’s why this hit so hard, especially here in New England. We’re built a little tough. We don’t always talk about feelings. We shovel snow, drink coffee, say “I’m fine,” and keep moving.
But Punch? Punch reminds us that even the toughest among us need something soft to hold onto sometimes.
When the internet found out, we collectively lost it. Did we not?
Even the CEO of IKEA reportedly heard Punch’s story and donated more plush monkeys to the zoo, because of course he did. How do you not? There’s even video now of Punch starting to bond with another macaque.
The two of them can be seen gently grooming the plush together, like it’s a shared treasure. If your heart didn’t melt watching that… check your pulse.
Social media has absolutely erupted. Punch memes. Punch merch. Punch stitched into people’s daily affirmations. And honestly? I get it.
In a world that feels like it’s constantly trying to harden us, Punch reminds us that it’s okay to cling to something soft. That healing doesn’t have to be loud. That sometimes comfort looks like a worn-in plush orangutan from IKEA.

The Lesson
Punch taught us that it’s okay to need comfort. That healing doesn’t have to be dramatic or loud.Sometimes it’s quiet. Sometimes it looks like clinging to something soft.
Punch taught us that just because your story starts sad doesn’t mean it stays that way. That safety can be learned. Trust can come back. Hope can grow.
Punch taught us that in a world full of noise, kindness still matters. And that we’re all just looking for something, anything, that makes us feel okay.
New England isn’t always loud with its emotions. But when something matters, we show up. Quietly. Fully. Punch’s story gave us permission to feel something good again, and right now, that might be exactly what we needed.
Punch’s story is still being written. And maybe that’s the best part. Because we’re all watching, rooting for him, and secretly realizing we might need our own version of that plushie to hold onto right now.
