🔴 Firefighter Robert Bishop was driving home from his shift with East Kingston

🔴 The woman nearly hit Bishop before hitting a utility pole

🔴 Two poles and power lines were brought down by the Challenger

Two off-duty firefighters pulled a woman from a burning car after it was in a crash Saturday afternoon.

East Kingston Fire Chief Ed Warren said the one of the firefighters, East Kingston firefighter Robert Bishop, was driving home from a shift with his children when he was nearly struck by the Dodge Challenger on East Road near the Apple Hill Golf Course around 3:30 p.m.

Bishop immediately stopped after seeing the car hit a utility pole, bring down wires all along the road, and burst into flames. He was assisted by another firefighter, Josh Abbott of the Chelmsford Massachusetts Fire Department, who worked to free the female driver as the car filled with smoke.

Together, they pulled her out as the Challenger exploded and became fully engulfed, according to Warren. Two utility poles were brought down by the crash, and Until crews worked to restore power to its customers.

Exeter Hospital ALS and the Exeter and Kensington fire departments responded to the crash.

"The heroic actions by Firefighters Bishop and Abbott no doubt saved this person's life," Chief Warren said. "This incident showcases the commitment all firefighters and first responders make to come to the aid of those in need, no matter what, and I want to thank them both for their quick and selfless actions."

The woman was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious injuries, according to the chief.
