This Extreme New Hampshire Hike Is One of the Hardest in the US
As someone who loves hiking and recently hiked Mount Monadnock, I always find myself looking for the next challenge. New Hampshire has no shortage of incredible trails, but one hike stands above almost all the rest when it comes to difficulty, endurance, and bragging rights. I may need to train a little (or a lot more) before tackling this one.

The Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire's White Mountains has been named one of the hardest day hikes in America by The Big Outside, landing on a list that includes some of the most demanding trails in the country.
If you've never heard of it, the Presidential Traverse isn't just a hike... it's an adventure to say the least.
The route is intense, crossing several of New Hampshire's Presidential peaks, including Mount Madison, Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington, Mount Monroe, Mount Eisenhower, Mount Pierce, and more, depending on the exact route you choose. The full traverse covers roughly 20 to 23 miles and packs in around 8,000 to 9,000 feet of elevation gain. (I'm tired and reaching for the ice and Aleve just reading this)
To really appreciate the scale of the Presidential Traverse, it helps to look at the peaks hikers are tackling along the way.
According to SectionHiker, most Presidential Traverses are completed from north to south, allowing hikers to knock out the biggest elevation gains early in the day. Yeah, that sounds like a plan.

Along the route, hikers climb a series of iconic White Mountain peaks:
• Mount Madison – 5,367 feet
• Mount Adams – 5,774 feet
• Mount Jefferson – 5,712 feet
• Mount Clay – 5,533 feet
• Mount Washington – 6,288 feet
• Mount Monroe – 5,384 feet
• Mount Franklin – 5,001 feet
• Mount Eisenhower – 4,780 feet
• Mount Pierce – 4,310 feet
• Mount Jackson – 4,052 feet
That's a lot of climbing.

What makes the Presidential Traverse especially challenging isn't just the distance. There's a crazy combination of relentless elevation changes, rugged rock fields, exposed ridgelines, unpredictable weather, and the sheer amount of time spent above treeline. Your lungs, knees and ankles will punch you in the face.
Even experienced hikers often need 10 to 15 hours... (or more) to complete the entire route.
I love getting out and exploring all of the hiking that New Hampshire has to offer but, one thing I've learned from my adventures so far is that the White Mountains demand respect. Conditions can change in a hurry, especially on Mount Washington. A beautiful sun filled morning can quickly turn into unexpected weather like wind, fog, rain, snow and temperatures that feel much colder than expected. So plan and prepare accordingly.
The Presidential Range is the perfect example of that.

According to AllTrails, the Presidential Traverse consistently ranks as one of the most difficult hikes in the Northeast, earning rave reviews from hikers who describe it as exhausting, breathtaking, rewarding, and unforgettable all at the same time.
And honestly, that's part of the appeal.
There's something special about standing on a ridgeline above the clouds, looking across some of the most rugged terrain in New England, knowing every step to get there was earned.
Whether the Presidential Traverse is on your hiking bucket list or already checked off, it's another reminder that some of the most epic outdoor adventures in America are right here in New Hampshire.
Hiker's Note: Before tackling any White Mountains hike, especially something as demanding as the Presidential Traverse, tell someone your route, where you're parked, and when you plan to be back. Check the forecast, bring extra water, food, and layers, stay on marked trails, and pack out what you pack in. Good preparation and good trail etiquette help keep New Hampshire's mountains enjoyable... and safe, for everyone.
