"There is a baby on that beer bottle, let's get that," said no underage drinker ever.

A bill that would have changed the hard and fast rule against having minors appear on beer labels was vetoed on account that it would somehow encourage underage drinking. According to the Governor Hassan:

“Substance misuse, including alcohol misuse, continues to be one of the major public health and safety challenges facing us as a state,” Hassan said in her veto message. “Moreover, statistics suggest that New Hampshire has among the highest rates of underage drinking in the country.”

Here is the problem. This beer, a chocolate stout from Founder's Brewing Company, is sold throughout much of the country, including our neighbors in Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. Oh, and those border states? They all have lower rates of underage drinking. I understand that correlation isn't causation, but do you really think some 17 year old looking for beer is going to be tempted by a picture of an infant eating oatmeal on $12 four pack of craft beer?

So it goes, common sense sacrificed for platitudes that have little bearing on how things work. Perhaps I'll grab an Old Brown Dog from Smuttynose before it is banned on account of encouraging canine drinking...
