Looks like I may able to travel more this year!

According to the Economist since Delta unveiled a whole new class of air travel United and American have now followed suit.

It's called "basic economy" and essentially what it means is that they've found a way to make flying cheaper so long as you don't mind giving up some of the "luxuries" of flying in traditional coach.

So what will you loose?  Basically the ability to book a certain seat ahead of time.

Essentially you'll still sit in coach, but your ticket is subject to whatever seat is available (i.e. you'll probably end up in the middle seat, right in front of the crapper.)

You also forfeit your ability to upgrade your seat upon arrival to the airport.

I suppose it's still better than traveling in the belly of the plane.
